For a little over two years, from the beginning of 1937 until March 11, 1939, out-of-state salesmen conducting business in New Mexico were required to register and obtain a special “Salesman” license plate for their vehicles. These plates had a serial number prefix of “S” to uniquely identify them, and were in addition to the regular registration and license plates required in the salesman’s home state. Seen here is a 1937 Buick with 1937 N.M. Salesman plate # S-1106, along with the owner’s regular home state 1937 Colorado plate, # 4-5175. NMplates collection.

The registration information on this 1937 passenger plate shows that the car was a 1937 Oldsmobile sedan registered to Earl H. Conley of Tucumcari. Courtesy Rick Holben.
