New Mexico Tribal and Pueblo Plates
Although some Native American tribes in other states issue their own
motor vehicle registration license plates, none of the 23 tribes and
pueblos in New Mexico do so. Members of these tribes and pueblos
register their vehicles with the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division (MVD)
in the same manner as all other New Mexico residents. Tribal government and pueblo government vehicles are eligible for government (G) plates but not state government (SG) plates. (Years ago, tribal- and pueblo-owned government vehicles received U.S. Official plates, but this practice was ended by sometime in the 1980s. Examples of those, in use on vehicles, can be seen here.) Several of New Mexico’s tribes and pueblos sell unofficial booster plates as souvenirs which can be mounted on the front bumper of a vehicle. |
